May 14-18, 2012

A big thanks to all the parents, grandparents, and friends who helped out on our field trip to Dixie Stampede!  We had a wonderful time and would like to thank the PTO for their financial support.  Without you, it wouldn’t be possible!

Reading

This week we will finish our historical fiction books and write a book report which can be used for the Civil War project as well.  We will finish up the year with a mini mystery during the remainder of the week.

April 30-May 4, 2012

WOW!  The end seems to be creeping up!  Can you believe we have only three weeks of school left? 

From May 1 through May 8 here at WIS, we are collecting for the “Wish I May” organization.  Students may bring in cake mixes, frosting mixes or ready-to-spread, candles–anything necessary for birthday cakes.  These donations are used for those who need assistance with children’s birthday parties.  Please search your heart and your cupboard to help out!

Reading

We are continuing with Charley Skedaddle and Freedom Crossing, our historical fiction.  Students are responding in journals using reading strategies.  Students will write a book report for their social studies Civil War project. 

Spelling 

This week our spelling list focuses on the oi/oy sound.

April 23-27, 2012

With MAP testing finished, fifth graders turn their attention to the Civil War project.  In conjunction with the social studies content, we are reading historical fiction set during the Civil War time period.

Reading

We will be reading two books, Charley Skedaddle and Freedom Crossing, in class with others available for extra self-picks. 

Writing

We will be using persuasive writing techniques about various topics concerning the Civil War and our literature choices.

We are collecting several notes from students.  Please make sure your students has returned a field day note, Dixie Stampede note and $15 ticket money, symphony field trip note, and individual picture packet or money to purchase them.  Class pictures are still available for $2 each.

April 10-13, 2012

Reading

This week we are reviewing reading, writing, and test-taking skills in preparation for doing our best on the MAP test next week.  Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a good breakfast everyday, but especially during testing week.

Writing

We are polishing pieces of writing for the writing fair.  Entries will be on display April 30, 2012 for public viewing from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

We have no spelling list this week.  We will resume spelling lists and tests the week of April 23-29, 2012.

March 19-23, 2012

Reading

This week we are reading a biography about Benjamin Franklin.  We are learning about the elements of a biography, how to use questions to enhance comprehension, and multiple meaning words.

Writing

We are using commas in a series, with introductory phrases, and in compound sentences.  We are also planning how to write a biography.

Spelling

This week’s words have to ‘ch’ and ‘tch’ spelling pattern.

The book fair at WIS begins this Friday, March 23 and runs through Friday, March 30.  It will also be open during the Talent Show on March 29, 2012.

Reading

This week we are reading a mini mystery, working on drawing conclusions.  We use logic puzzles to help solve the crime.

Writing

We are choosing pieces of our original poetry to publish for the spring writing fair.  Students are publishing and illustrating their original poetry.

Spelling

February 27-March 2, 2012

Reading

We are reading various types of poetry in search of how authors use descriptive language to paint pictures for readers.  Students are reading an A-Z reader poetry collection as well as individual choice poetry collections.

Writing

Students are writng poetry in various forms in journals.  We are focusing on following poetry formats and choosing the best words for the job.

Spelling

This week’s words all have the letter x.  We will focus on the two sounds x can make: /gz/ and /ks/.

Reading

This week we are tying up loose ends of our realistic fiction unit.  Next we will be reading various types of poetry to support our writing goals this week. 

Writing

We will be starting a short poetry unit which focuses on descriptive language in writing.  Students will compose several types of poetry using descriptive language to paint pictures with words.

Spelling

This week’s spelling words all have the qu letter combination which spells the /kw/ sound,

February 13-16, 2012

Reading

This week we are finishing our literature sets Bridge to Terabithia, The Pinballs, and Dear Mr. Henshaw. Students are studying character traits, cause/effect relationships between events, and story plot.

Writing

Students are studying sentence structure in a variety of sentence types.  We are adding model (or example) sentences to our journals for use as a reference page.

Spelling

This week’s list has three ways to spell the ‘l’ sound:
